Of drugged mice and Eid gathering

Today the classes were full. Starting off with mechanism of drug action by Prof Tariq, another soft-spoken lecturer, followed by bacterial morphology by Dr Quazi, a short break, then bacterial culture by Dr Imad and then Prof Tariq again on pharmacodynamics. The classes were quite peaceful… I took a short nap in Dr Imad’s class…hehe…owh and Azza my roommate came back from her debate at IMU.

I took the opportunity during lunch break to go to the comp lab. It’s become my favourite place of lepak nowadays. Well, I met kakyung online and she told me of how easy people can access to my blog…tak bes le cenggitu. Apparently, I have to share my name with many others. I can no longer boast of being unique. I’m an herb now…

Well, at 2 p.m., we had a pharmaco practical on drug administration. We had to study the different methods of administering drugs into the body such as the usual oral method, subcutaneously or under the skin, intramuscular or at the muscle, intraperitoneal or in the abdomen, and intravenous or through the veins. The mode of entry of the drug into the body determines to a large extent the, the character, speed, dose and degree of action.

Since we couldn’t experiment on people, we had to do it on mice. The last time I had to hold a mouse was during dissection classes in the matriculation centre. They looked quite cute, white-furred little stinky animals. But all the same I was still geli. At first we had to wait for a long time for the MLT or medical lab technician to give us a briefing. Finally when it was our turn for the briefing and demo, there was little time left to do the experiment but we did it anyways.

We had to administer pentobarbital sodium (Nembutal) through the five methods and compare them. The drug would make the mice drowsy and make it fall asleep. We had to observe the time it took for the mice to lose their righting reflex or actually pass out.

Syahadah and I did it together. After gathering enuf courage to pick up the mouse, I finally managed and syahadah did the injection. Orally, subcutaneously and intraperitoneally went fine. But for the intramuscular one, me and syahadah switched roles. I’d do the injecting and she’d hold the mouse. After much hassle, she picked it up while I filled in the syringe. I took quite sometime doing it that syahadah became very nervous and let go of the mouse. Unintentionally she threw it on me and boy, did I scream.

After that the mouse became fidgety and wouldn’t be stay still. Maybe it sensed that we were two nervous wrecks and could foretell the danger it was in being handled by us. When we finally did try to do it again, injecting the drug in the gluteus maximus muscle of the legs, a friend commented that we were doing it wrong so only half of the drug was administered. Repeating it was tedious coz the mouse was already frightened of us so we left it alone and proceeded to he last mouse. Watching my friends doing the intravenous method was quite scary since it was hard to do. Most of the mice ended up bleeding profusely while little dose gets through. Some even die. So, me and syahadah thot we’d skip that one and do the intramuscular one again. This time successfully. Observing for the result was another thing altogether. We had to record the time the mice passed out until they woke back up and became active again. To see how long the effect of the drug lasts. The problem was our mice just didn’t wake up. They went out flat, poor cute little things.

Right after lab was the tilawah briefing. At that moment we just got to know that it was to be followed by a tilawah placement test like the EPT and APT during matrix. All 300 of us in the hall had to compete to finish the test early as it was conducted on a first come first serve basis. The three ustaz’s just wanted to hear our recitation. If they thought we needed training and lessons then we’ll have to follow the classes. If we were okay, we’d be exempted. Everyone was hoping for the latter.

Alhamdulillah by 6 I was in my room. Rested for a while then bathed and prepared for the eid gathering. Me and asma’ wanted to go after isya’ although the program supposedly starts at 8. malas nak g awal2. The turnout was quite good. The small ballroom was packed. When we came, the dean was delivering his speech but we could hardly hear it at the back due to the poor sound system.

When it was time to dine, there were so many people I was practically suffocated. There was satay, 5 sticks each, lontong, mee gemuk and mee hoon, ketupat, lemang, rendang ayam and daging and kuih raya. The crowded place and furthermore confined made the atmosphere not really a pleasant one to stay there long. After taking pics, me and me friends went back early. On the whole, I’d rate the event 3 stars. I know how much effort went into it. Whatever happened was just out of their hands.

That’s all I have to say.
