eye update
i went to see my ophthalmologist today. he said that the blurry image that i was complaining of was already estimated by the pre-op assessment machines. he asked me to be patient and wait for a month before i run to the optometrist begging for glasses so that i can see the finer details.
i have been so used to sharp images provided by my glasses that i thought that was normal. rupe2nye its not.
actually, i don't really know what normal vision is anymore. i've been wearing my specs for 14 years.
but now i can see and read without my specs. occasionally my vision fluctuates.
let's wait for another 3 weeks then.

adjusting
i keep wanting to remove my specs everytime i take wudhu'.
i keep wanting to adjust my specs but find nothing there so i have to settle for rubbing around my eyes and my nasal bridge.
my vision is still not 6/6 in both eyes yet.
my left eye vision is still blurry but it's deficiency is covered by my right eye.
the resulting binocular vision is not that sharp giving me mild headaches upon straining the eyes.

ortho revision
but my fren had her exams on wednesday afternoon and was afraid that she couldnt clerk a patient in time. since my clinical exams finished on tuesday, before my exams, she asked if i could replace her (i was suggested by 2 of my verrrrrrry good and thoughtful best friends. hmm). being the kind person that i am (hehe), i susah nak say no but i thot i'd try to find someone else to replace me.
rupe2nye, harapan tinggal harapan. no one wanted to take up the job or even help me do it. i tak ingat hape pun pasal ortho except that its about bones and accicents and a few other headings je.
pergilah clerk sorang2 pada pagi rabu semalam and mintak belas ihsan mane2 4th year yg ada di wad. and mengadu pada pak din and musab. they asked me to do a diabetic foot case sebab konfem kuar pro. so pergilah mencari patient pempuan di was 2A. i clerked this one indian lady whose foot was quite badly looking. her daughter was very cooperative. the patient herself macam layan separuh hati. it was oredi lunchtime by then and i had to attend asma's bachellorette party at ECM hehe. asma' belanja at johnny's before she becomes a mrs.
then petang nak sambung examine patient with faizah, but the patient buat2 tidur so we frantically looked for another case at wad laki2 plak.
alhamdulillah there was this 61 year old malay pakcik who was very cooperative. so we could clerk and examine him fully setakat mane yg ingat.
yesterday night, my frens tolong me perpare the case. saaayang faizah and sibah and aida :)
today punyelah berdebar sebab kene present in front of the whole batch. besenya in a small group je. alhamdulillah mr hafiz was nice and gave enlightening commentaries and tips for pro. it wasn't that bad. hopefully everyone got something out of it.

my exams.
i got long case bronchopneumonia (ddx tb) becoz of fever and chronic cough for 1month with dr fadzil.
short case steroid resistant nephrotic syndrome with cushingoid features with dr aye aye (question: look at this boy and examine him accordingly). kene examine steroid toxicity. good thing dah buat ngan dr zabidi hari tuh. he had moon facies and bilateral leg oedema. yg lain sume tade.
OSCE kuar gambar conjunctival haemorrhage, perianal desquamation, rashes on the lower limb extensors, rashes on the back and barium meal of duodenal atresia. sume org ada macam2 jawapan. 2 minits nak pikir. kring loceng dah bunyi. hentam sajelah whatever pun. haha.
PMP kuar diabetic ketoacidosis and hydronephrosis with UTI secondaru to genitourinary tract anomalies.
i had a rather bad episode of psychosomatic symptoms this time around. now dah abes the triger, boleh lah relax kejap for 2 months (yeke?). i think worries of PRO lagi teruk kot.
3 more exams to go thru including PRO.

session with Prof Zabidi
the bedside teaching with him was very interesting.
while examining the kids, he told us to apply TOP;
- thorough observation
- oppurtunistic
- purposeful play
seeing him in action would make anyone interested to be a paediatrician :)
kak chik has a program anak angkat in kuantan so i culik her from her program and took her to my place.

Living in UIA Kuantan
The lack of affordable and effective public transport necessitates one to own a car or motorcycle to enable one to go about his affairs.
However, the parking spaces are limited and many have to park along the roads which is considered illegal by the campus authority and thus they give out summons to those who disobey the law.
The ever-disappointing cafeteria forces us to eat out. (sekarang ni ok sket café).
Since our campus is still in the developmental stages (macam developing country), there are many limitations that we have to put up with (including the construction noise pollution).
And occasionally, the administration just loves to come up with ridiculous rules to make our life more miserable.
The hostel people have a deep dislike for medical students as they are regarded as stuck up, obstinate rule breakers and uncooperative. We too share the same resentment towards them.
(dramatic giler tak?? hehe)
Nevertheless, it is not all dread and misery. My silver lining is the bi’ah solehah, conducive environment for learning (which some would say is BORING) and the weekly Islamic input lectures in the medical syllabus. And many more actually. Malas nak piker sekarang what they are.
Prof Omar designed the syllabus so that UIA medical graduates would be integrated and wholesome doctors, getting the best of the medical and Islamic world. The topics ranging from tauhid, Islamic history to contributions of Islamic scholars are given by our very own medical doctors. A few lectures are given by guest speakers from Gombak like the ever cool and distinguished Prof Kamal (former UIA rector), Ustaz Hamidon (deputy rector of students affairs), and a few others whose names I cant seem to recall right now.
Last week, Dr Azarisman, a cardiologist, lectured on the muslim scholars.

He focused on Ibnu Sina maybe because he was a great physician and muslim scholar. Never knew he was a syiah, one of the 12 imams. But he made strides in the medical and Islamic world nonetheless. Abu Ali al-Hussaini Ibn Abdullah Ibnu Sina was born in Bukhara, travelled incessantly and was a prolific author. He memorized the quran at a young age, turned to medicine by the gae of 16 and became a physician by 18. (2 years of medical training??). his magnum opus was the Qanun Fi At-Tibb (Canon of Medicine), used as a reference textbook in the west for 600years.
The moral of the story is he was just an average human being who travelled, studied, moved between principalities loking for a job and to earn a living, became a royal advisor, imprisoned, thrown into the streets, persecuted yet still managed to write numerous books both medical and non-medical. Dr said the only frailty he didn’t suffer was marriage (suffer ke?). Many scholars dedicated their lives to knowledge and never had the time to find a spouse like Imam Nawawi.
One time ibnu sina participated in war, and still continued to dictate paragraphs to his scribes.
When asked on why he was constantly working nonstop, he answered “ I prefer a short life with width then a narrow life of length”.
The sunnah of great scholars include;
- travels to far places for the search of knowledge,
- persecution, and
- they never died at their birth places (because they traveled).
Kita? Sume orang nak keje dekat dgn rumah masing2 je.
The take home message was to become a great person, one must be tested accordingly. Past scholars were persecuted in their quest for knowledge. How far have we been tested??
I’ve never had to work for a living while studying.
I don’t have to worry about my next meal.
I can sleep comfortably at night without worrying about security or the building coming down on me.
My parents are still alive and healthy Alhamdulillah. (many of my classmates’s parents have passed away)
The only tests I have are too minor that complaining about them seems embarrassing.
The only things I have to worry about are my perennial exams, what to wear tomorrow and what I want eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
so, have i been tested???
..........................................................................
If I could remember all the lectures, apply them and am able to convey them to others, I’d definitely be an excellent muslim doctor.
But, that is just not the case. I am only human and my memory is flawed.
I like the islamic input programme very much except a few je. It’s sad to see some of my classmates take it for granted and play truant.
COMMON CASES IN PAEDS WARD
Other cases include:
Dysmorphism with vesicourethral reflux and failure to thrive
Poorly controlled epilespsy with right-sided hemiparesis
Herpes zoster
Kawasaki disease
Scarlet fever
Scabies
Meningomyelocele with urinary & bowel incontinence and bilateral congenital talipes equinovarus.
Peritonitis in a child with end stage renal failure
Biliary atresia post Kasai operation
Neonatology
She gave 4 lectures on neonatology and then we had a practical session on neonatal resuscitation. So we practiced resuscitation and intubation on a baby mannequin and we took turns acting out possible scenarios that could occur involving the neonate.
Best jugak jadi neonatologist. Boleh buat kerja2 anaesthetist jugak.
Just FYI, a baby is considered a neonate from birth until day 28, then the child is considered an infant until 1 years old. After that they are considered toddlers until 3 years old. 4-6 is preschool age. And then they become the school-going group .
caught in the act
haha. my 40 seconds of fame thanx to my dear friend dayah.
this occured waktu seminar adolesent health yesterday.
sedar2 je tengok sume org gelakkan. ces. pastu konfem lah dah tak tido kan. haha.
bukan nye i sengaje tido pun. that's why its called 'ter'tidur.
pastu kitorang menagkap gambar org lain yg tido plak.
hish, susah lah ade chronic sleeping problem.
NAMES
In the paeds ward, you can see the latest trends in names given by parents.
For boys, every other kid is an Adam, Daniel, Haikal or Farish or the combination of those names.
For girls, popular names include Puteri, Qistina, Batrisha, Nadia and Fatin.
Most have at least 2 names. Some even have four. Plus bin or binti and name ayah 2 or 3 words jadi 6 or 7 words altogether in their name. penat nak tulis mase pekse or isi borang.
However long or sedap a name is, they end up being called by a monosyllable or two, haha.
to differentiate the kids kitorang kene panggil them by their diseases i.e nadia SLE or nadia hemosiderosis. haha
For me, I prefer unique, single names with meaning or the names of past great muslims or scholars.
But, it is not time yet for me to be thinking about children names yet. Although it can be an entertaining activity when one is bored. I know several people who already have a list of their favourite children names :)

UNFORESEEN EVENTS
At 10.30 pm, my friend AA asked me to send her to the terminal bus station at 12.30 pm. Her bus was at 1.00 am, Transnasional which is notorious for its punctuality. I said ok.
Around 11.30 pm, another friend, H, asked me to send her and 2 friends for their 1.00 am bus too. I said ok too. I thought I could hit two birds with one stone.
I was very sleepy and tired but was ready by 12.30pm. AA was ready. She brought S to keep me company on my way back. H took several minutes to reach the car. Then, one of H’s friend, AB couldn’t be contacted so they tried frantically calling her roommate. She had fallen asleep while waiting. We had to weigh between waiting for AB and leaving her or we wouldn’t make it in time to the terminal. We decided to wait. It was a nerve wrecking moment for us. Waiting for her to reach the car seemed like forever. We had only 10 minutes left before 1am. From UIA to the bus station it usually takes about 15 minutes depending on the traffic.
As we drove off, the pakcik guard nak tahan lah pulak but I didn’t have time to stop. Then, there were road constructions which reduced the 2 lanes to only one lane. And we had to stop at a red traffic light. I drove as fast as I could (yang tak berape laju sangat). As we reached the terminal, we saw a Transnasional bus pulling out of the driveway. We prayed it wasn’t AA’s bus.
I waited for a while to make sure that my friends got on their buses. Suddenly, AA came walking to the car, teary-eyed. The bus we saw was the one she was supposed to board. Due to my insufficient knowledge of the roads and bus routes, I was unable to offer untuk kejar bas tu. Kesian AA. All we could do was to return to UIA. It was a silent ride back to the hostel.
Alhamdulillah the other 3 managed to board their bus.
I keep thinking whether I did the right thing by agreeing to H’s request when I had already promised AA first. My obligation to AA took precedence over H’s. But I couldn’t turn my back on H. Should i have left AB? is a bird in hand better than 2 birds in a bush?
Moral of the story, we can plan but Allah also plans and Allah is the best of planners. We can try our best within our limited capacity but some things are beyond our control, like a friend accidentally falling asleep. inshaAllah, whatever happens, it is for the best.

my consciousness level naik turun mase kelas dr ranging from total alertness, drowsiness, stupor to unconscious but still arousable, hehe. he's notorious for his long (read: more than 2 hours) classes. after the firts 1 and a half hour, dr tak penat langsung, kitorang yg penat haha. nampak sgt stamina yg menurun di kalangan generasi muda2 nih.

a jumble of things
our paediatrics department which consists of 2 lecturers (a head of department and an invited lecturer from myanmar) isn't really the most efficient department. today alone there were many blunders with our schedules mixed up and all over the place.
i don't have much to say about paeds yet besides that weekends will usually be full due to the many invited lecturers from other unis and hospitals who come to teach us.
i drove this car back to kuantan.
(only a quarter of the journey actually sebab penat and ngantuk and sakit perut).
good thing i had other drivers to back me up.
i know nawaz is definitely gonna miss the car. haha.

after going to nihlah+mujahid's walimah in bukit antarabangsa, we stopped by nibah's fren's house, tasha, anak Dato' Mahir (the owner of MAHIR productions, syarikat yg produce buku soalan2 tahun lepas tuh). saje nak tengok the lifestyle of the rich and mighty. haha.
i'm glad with my own background, alhamdulillah.
we were stranded there for a while due to the heavy rain.

celebrating raya in shah alam
since our experience of eidulfitr in johor last 3 years ago was dull and boringl with our 2 elder sisters celebrating at their in-laws, we don't want another of that happening. so we decided to celebrate eid at kakyung's place in shah alam instead. at least everyone will be around and we can go visit our many relatives in klang valley yang tak balik kampung.
i arrived at kakyung's house on sunday night. nawaz was so happy to see me. (that feeling is priceless i tell ya.) i helped clean the house and make it ready for the whole family to stay. mak, ayah, nibah, kakchik and hammad came the next day.
on raya eve, we broke our fast at pak andak's house in klang. mak andak's cooking was glorious and delicious as usual. we didn't do the regular takbir after isya'. pak andak had a group of his neighbours over to do takbir ramai2. my sisters and i stayed in a room at the back and chatted while observing nawaz, aisyah and ayyasy play happily (nawaz and aisyah have a love-hate relationship... they're excited to see each other but they gaduh and fight just as easily).
pagi raya was the usual berebut toilet and ayah rushing us all to get ready on time. we went to masjid negeri shah alam. it was full of people by the time we arrived. my intestines just had to grumble at that time lah kan and required urgent attention so i had to ajak kak chik to teman me find the toilet. we were both in the toilet during the 1st rakaat of prayer but alhamdulillah we could join the 2nd rakaah. since the mosque was full, we had to pray just outside of the toilet. dulu pernah la solat kat tangga but this experience definitely beats that one.
after the prayer, i ajak kakchik pergi tempat lain. tak nak lah dengar khutbah pun kat depan tandas so we went up the stairs. as we were going up, a group of ladies were going the opposite way (nak balik umah kot). i looked toward the other stairs and saw segerombolan lelaki pun balik jugak.
this is a new scene for me since at all the solat rayas i've been too (in baling or sg petani or skudai) people stayed until the end of the khutbah. of course lah i slalu tidur during the khutbahs if their boring and the tone is monotonous, but still i sticked around. terkejut tengok orang balik just after solat raya. yang lelaki dah siap berkumpul kat tepi rak kasut and merokok. (lain sket suasana kat kl nih)
since i couldn't really focus on hearing the khutbah due to the poor sound system outside, my attention was on the various colourful dresses of the many indonesian workers who attended the prayer. orang melayu punye baju raya biase je either baju kurung and kebaya and maybe jubah only menutup aurat properly or not je. but these indonesian ladies garments were eye-catching. macam2 jenis baju ada. they got up in groups so i had a constant diversion from the khutbah only hearing glimpses of the content.
back at kayung's house we had our regular salam2 session and tangkap gambar (walaupun sume camera buat hal, good thing for cameraphones). the difference is in the number of people. at our kampung, there would be a large group of aunts and uncles to salam. everyone had to wait their turn. our session didn't last long this time.
then we went to kakyung's in-laws in PJ. the nasi lemak and nasi himpit with rendang and lodeh were heavenly.
then we went to pak ngah's house in ampang. there we ate rendang kerang and daging masak pedas.
then at ayah's friend's house in taman melawati, they served strawberries as the brother owned a strawberry farm in cameron highlands. at night, we went to aunti maiza's house in klang and had rendang peparu.
mak and ayah went to another house after that but my sisters and i begged to go home as our stomachs were already bloated.
it doesn't matter where you celebrate raya, as long as you have your family around :)
eid mubarak everyone!
