100% silk tie and a maroon shirt

It was the first time i bought anything for a guy, or guys for that matter. After my seminar, my group wanted to buy something for Dr Imad, our advisor and our assessors Dr Yi Yi and Dr Maung Maung. We also wanted to repay Zaid Kadir for helping us at such short notice. Julia and Azamani belanja him dinner. Me, Faizah and Hanim didn't want to do that so we thought we'd buy him something instead.

After taking some time looking about, we finally bought Zaid a maroon shirt. dunno if he'll fit it or even wear it.

then we had to find something for Dr Imad. We decided to get him a tie. I've never bought a tie before and dunno what kind he'd like. After going through several hundred types, we found one that was within our budget. eheh.

i was in charge of wrapping both gifts. Azza gave me a hand. As she inspected the tie, she commented on the label stating that it was 100% silk. i didn't notice it. it is common knowledge that guys can't wear anything made of silk except under certain circumstances. i'm inexperienced in these things and was kinda puzzled. what were we supposed to do? takkan tanak bagi sebab dah beli and tak naklah Dr tak pakai plak kalau bagi karang.

i messaged ayah, ustazah Hamidah and the next day asked Prof Omar about it.

Ustazah Hamidah was the first to reply. She said that there is a khilaf in this matter. some ulama' say its haram while some say it is permissible since a tie is considered an accessory, not really a clothing.

Prof Omar said the same thing, then he asked us how much we bought it for. About RM3o, i said. He laughed and said that only pure silk ties made of silk worms are haraam to be worn by men.. Those were priced at about RM300-RM400. The one we bought must be synthetic silk. Whew, that was a relief.

Ayah called me to give me the answer while i was on the bus going back to Kuantan after the Ihtifal. Ayah had asked some ustazs and they gave the same answers as Ustazah Hamidah. (thanks ayah for your effort, i appreciate it).

now i know.
